Gardaí are continuing to question two men in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man outside his home at the Abbey Court apartment complex in Tralee.

The victim has been named locally as 53-year-old Joe Brosnan, who was originally from Connolly Park in the town.

Mr Brosnan was found by gardaí and the emergency services in a critical condition outside his apartment on the ground floor of the complex at around 7pm yesterday evening.

He died a short time later.

Neigbours described him as a "lovely, quiet living man", a grandfather, who lived with his cat in the Abbey Court complex.

A man in his 50s was arrested nearby. A second man, in his 30s, was arrested in Killarney earlier today.

Both men remain in custody for questioning and can be held for up to 24 hours before having to be charged or released.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist Dr Heidi Okkers and a preliminary report has been given to gardaí.

Meanwhile, it was hoped that residents who were temporarily rehoused overnight because the scene was cordoned off, would be able to access their homes again once the Garda Technical Bureau complete their examination of the scene.
