Gardaí investigating the discovery of the bodies of an elderly couple at their home in Kenmare say they are treating their deaths as unexplained, pending the outcome of post-mortem examinations.

It is understood that gardaí are not looking for anyone else in connection with their deaths.

The bodies of the husband and wife, who were in their 80s, were discovered after the alarm was raised by a relative at around 10am on Sunday morning.

The bodies have since been removed to University Hospital Kerry where the post-mortems will be carried out.

Their home, a semi-detached bungalow on the quiet Dromneavane Estate in Kenmare, remains cordoned off pending the results.

The Coroner's Court and the State Pathologist's Office have been alerted.

It is understood the couple, who were originally from England, had been living in Kenmare for some time.
