A retired senior garda, who has been questioned in connection with alleged organised crime offences, has had his period of detention extended for another three days.

The 61-year-old man was arrested last Wednesday as part of an investigation by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation into the activities of a north Dublin city criminal gang.

He was arrested on suspicion of enhancing the ability of the gang to facilitate or commit a crime.

His initial 48-hour period of detention expired today.

He was brought before a district court judge, who granted the garda application to detain him for up to a further 72 hours.

He is being questioned at Irishtown Garda Station and he can be detained until Monday.
