A 38-year-old man has been charged in connection with the barricade incident last Tuesday night during which two gardaí were shot and injured.

The man is charged with firearms offences and is due before Blanchardstown District Court later today.

The two gardaí were responding to a report that shots had been fired in the Whitechapel estate in Blanchardstown when they were fired upon.

One garda was shot in the foot, the other in the arm and foot.

They underwent surgery in Connolly hospital and are recovering from their injuries.

The man was arrested following a three hour siege after trained negotiators persuaded him to hand himself over to gardaí.

Following consultations with the Director of Public Prosecutions he was charged with a number of firearms offences, including unlawful possession of firearms and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
