The manufacturers of the Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine have submitted a request to the European Medicines Agency to expand the use of their vaccine to include adolescents aged 12 to 15.
There are four separate Covid-19 vaccines licensed for use here.
So far however, none are available for our 275,000 people aged between 12 and 15-years old.
Now, Pfizer BioNTech, who have supplied 72% of the vaccines so far administered in Ireland, are aiming to change that.
A phase-three clinical trial they conducted among 2,260 young people in that age group showed their vaccine to be 100% effective against the virus, that it produced robust antibody responses, and was well tolerated.
They have submitted their test data to the European Medicines Agency along with a formal request to extend the use of their vaccine to this age group throughout Europe.
Chairman of the Government's High Level Task force on Covid-19 Vaccination Professor Brian MacCraith said this could be a very important development.
If the application is successful, it would have significant and positive implications for our secondary school population.
