The National Youth Council of Ireland has asked young people not to wait until an election or referendum is called before they register to vote.

It is urging young people to make sure they have registered to vote before next Wednesday. That will ensure they will be able to cast their ballot in future elections or referendums.

In the last 12 months, 62,000 young people became eligible to vote however, the National Youth Council said while the vast majority want to vote, not all are aware they have to register.

Any person who turned 18 since the election last February and is not registered, and any one who is currently 17, but will turn 18 by 15 February 2021, can apply for inclusion in the 2021/2022 register.

Those for whom this applies are asked to fill out a form and send it to their local authority, county council or city council by Wednesday 25 November.
