The Carer of the Year Awards are being launched today, in a year when carers are facing significant additional challenges due to Covid-19.

Family Carers Ireland says the pandemic has highlighted the important role carers play in society.

It says the virus has been challenging for those in caring roles, because of the reduction or cancellation of vital supports and services.

The announcement coincides with the completion of a 5km charity walk by 17-year-old Jack O'Donovan in Fingal.

Jack, who has cerebral palsy, has raised money for Family Carers Ireland and the Central Remedial Clinic.

The awards will take place in November.
