Flooding this week has left its its mark on the west coast and the midlands with renewed calls to improve flood defences in areas that have once again been inundated.

Hundreds of acres of farmland are still underwater following days of heavy rain.

Minister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran is calling for a Farm Recovery Grant to assist farmers struggling with livestock and damage to farm buildings during the current flooding.

Following another meeting this morning of Leitrim County Council's Emergency Management Team, the council said conditions have remained relatively stable in the past 24 hours.

Pumping of flood waters continues in both Leitrim Village and Carrick-on-Shannon to contain water levels in there while raised pedestrian walkways have also been put in place in those areas to maintain access for pedestrians.

The council said it continues to engage with communities and property owners in the affected areas.
