Plans to open the Houses of the Oireachtas to the public as part of an annual architectural event have been cancelled in the wake of the Extinction Rebellion protests.

2,800 people had been due to visit the Houses over the weekend as part of the 'Open House' event.

But in a statement, the Ceann Comhairle said the event had been cancelled due to what he described as a "serious incident" last night in which several climate change protesters locked themselves to the Merrion Street gates of Leinster House.

Seán Ó Fearghaíl said: "We are bitterly disappointed to have to take this course of action. However.....we cannot take any further health and safety risks for the hundreds of guests who wished to attend and equally we cannot place our staff at risk."

He said an open weekend would be rescheduled as soon as possible.
