A search took place earlier today for four men, one of whom was believed to have been armed, after a van was hijacked in Co Limerick.

The incident happened near Caherline in the east of the county at around 3pm this afternoon.

It is believed the driver of the van is involved in the motor parts business and may have been targeted as a result of cash being carried in his vehicle.

The suspects left the scene in the van in the direction of Herbertstown.

The alarm was raised and gardaí at Bruff were involved in a follow-up operation to try to locate the four raiders involved.

A garda helicopter was called to help the search which was concentrated on a large geographic area of east Co Limerick stretching from Caherline down to Hospital and east towards Doon.

The van was later recovered in a wooded area on the Limerick/Tipperary border near Doon, Co Limerick.

The driver, a man in his 30s, is not believed to have suffered any injuries.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage, to contact Roxboro Garda Station on 0612144340 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
