Revenue officers have seized 118,140 cigarettes estimated to be worth over €70,000 after a surveillance operation off the coast of Dublin.
The officers aboard the Revenue Customs Cutter "Faire" are understood to have detained an Italian-registered merchant vessel following the discovery of the cigarettes.
The cigarettes branded L&M, Marlboro and Winston had an estimated retail value of over €70,000.
The vessel was later released following the payment of a penalty of €50,000.
This seizure was part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.
