Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has expressed concerns over the alleged breaches of personal data at Independent News and Media.

He said democracy can not function without a strong and independent media and a diversity of press ownership.

Speaking at the launch of the Project Ireland 2040 plan in Galway today, the Taoiseach said: "I do have concerns, I'm concerned anytime somebody's personal emails or electronic information is accessed by anyone."

"For democracy to function we need to have a democratic press and we need to have a diversity of press ownership as well," Mr Varadkar said.

He added that the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement is going to initiate an investigation which he said is appropriate.
