More than 80 jobs are expected to be created in Bailieborough, Co Cavan following the opening of a major new dairy facility for Lakeland Dairies.

The farmer-owned co-op already employs more than 800 people and the new jobs are expected by 2019.

Lakeland Dairies processes milk supplied by 2,400 farmers on both sides of the border.

It produces milk powder and butter, and exports products and ingredients to more than 80 countries worldwide.

The new plant, which was officially opened this morning by the Minister for Agriculture, Trade and the Marine, Michael Creed, comes after five years of planning and €40m of investment.

It will enable the processing of the extra milk that farmers can supply since the abolition of EU milk quotas.

The facility is among the most advanced milk powder plants in the world and one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Fine Gael Senator and local TD Joe O'Reilly said the new facility in Bailieborough "signifies a vote of confidence in Cavan as a business base, and in the talent of our local workforce".

Meanwhile, US pharmaceutical company, PTC Therapeutics has announced the creation of 10 jobs, bringing its workforce at its European headquarters in Dublin to 40.

PTC's Dublin site is responsible for the company’s finance, quality assurance, legal, HR, regulatory, commercial and supply chain management for its international markets.
