Police in England have begun a murder investigation following the death of an Irishman in Birmingham.

Phillip Leonard, who is believed to be from Co Louth, was found with serious head injuries in Birmingham city centre in the early hours of Friday, 28 July.

The 34-year-old was treated in hospital but died on Monday.

A post-mortem examination found he died as a result of his head injuries. Police said his injuries were consistent with an attack.

Police have arrested and charged a 26-year-old man, with wounding, in connection with the incident.

The suspect, also from Ireland, has been remanded in custody.

West Midlands Police has appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward with information.
