A lorry driver has died after a crash on the M1 motorway in Co Meath just south of the toll plaza near Gormanston.

No other vehicle was involved in the incident, which happened shortly after 8.30am.

The driver, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Gardaí are appealing to witnesses to contact Ashbourne Garda Station on 01-8010600.

Separately, a pedestrian, believed to be in his 40s, died after being struck by a car in Co Wicklow in the early hours of this morning.

The collision occurred on the Coolgreany Road in Arklow at about 2.20am.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to St Columcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The driver of the car was not injured.
