Gardaí in Dublin believe they foiled a shooting attempt last night after arresting a man in his 30s and finding a gun and ammunition in a discarded bag.

The man had been driving a car that was being followed by gardaí when he abandoned the vehicle and fled into Collinstown Park in west Dublin around 9.50pm

Three uniformed gardaí pursued him on foot and he was arrested.

A bag containing a hand gun and a loaded magazine was also found in a follow-up search.

The man is currently being detained at Lucan Garda Station.

The handgun has been sent to the Garda Technical Bureau for a ballistic and forensic examination.

The car in which he was travelling was also seized.

One of the three pursuing gardaí is a recent graduate of Templemore training college and yesterday was only her fourth day on the job.
