The US President-elect Donald Trump has said he intends to appoint Brian Burns as the next US ambassador to Ireland.

Mr Trump told the New York Times he would appoint Mr Burns, who is the son of an adviser to Joe Kennedy, the father of the late US President John F Kennedy.

He was the youngest director of the American Irish Foundation, which was established in 1963 by John F Kennedy and Eamon de Valera.

In the mid 1980s, Mr Burns merged the American Ireland Foundation with the Ireland Fund, formed by former Irish ambassador Dan Rooney, and businessman Tony O'Reilly.
