Naas Circuit Criminal Court has fixed a date next year for the trial of the driver of a car involved in a crash that claimed the lives of her four young friends.

Dayna Kearney, 21, from Cross Neen, Co Carlow, appeared in court this morning.

Ms Kearney, a student, was seriously injured in the collision with another vehicle on the N78 Athy Link Road at Burtown, outside Athy, Co Kildare, on 6 January 2015.

Her friends Aisling Middleton, Niamh Doyle, and Gemma Nolan, all aged 19 and from Athy, were killed instantly.

Charmine Carroll, 20, from Co Carlow, was also killed instantly in the crash.

The five friends were travelling together in a Volkswagen Polo driven by Ms Kearney when the collision happened.

Today the court heard that the trial will last up to a week.

Ms Kearney remained silent throughout today's brief hearing.

Judge Michael O'Shea agreed to fix the case for 1 February.
