Gardaí investigating the deaths of a couple in Co Mayo say they are keeping an open mind about what may have happened.

Tom and Kitty Fitzgerald were found dead at their home near the village of Irishtown yesterday.

Their bodies were removed to Mayo General Hospital this afternoon. Post-mortem examinations are expected to be carried out tomorrow.

The couple's son, Paul Fitzgerald, who is aged in his 30s is being treated in Beaumont Hospital for head injuries.

A garda forensics team was to carry out a technical examination of the scene.

News of the deaths has deeply shocked and saddened the local community.

Both Mr Fitzgerald, who was in his 70s, and Ms Fitzgerald, aged in her 60s, were very active in their parish in Irishtown.

Fr Martin O'Connor described them as a lovely couple who were well regarded locally.

Gardaí in Mayo have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
