The Dáil has voted by 97 votes to 47 votes to accept a Government amendment not to accept an Anti-Austerity Alliance-People Before Profit bill calling for the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.

The bill proposed to hold a referendum to delete from the Constitution the 1983 amendment which guarantees the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn.

The Government amendment approved by the Dáil was to reject the bill due to the ongoing deliberations of the Citizens' Assembly.

Fianna Fáil TD Michael Moynihan and Independent TD Maureen O'Sullivan abstained from the vote.

The majority of Fianna Fáil TDs accepted the Government amendment.

It was the second vote on the issue today.

Earlier 96 TDs voted for the amendment to the AAA-PBP Bill to be put down.
