A 28-year old man has appeared before Cork District Court over a hostage situation at a house in the city earlier today.

Bernard Ring of Kilbarry Place, Farranree in Cork faces a charge of false imprisonment and is accused of producing a dumbbell, mirror and gas cylinder during the course of the incident at the house on St Mary's Road.

Judge Olann Kelleher refused an application for bail and remanded Mr Ring in custody until Thursday 22 September.

A second man was also arrested following the incident.

Gardaí say they were called to the house at 4.45am and found the front door barricaded from the inside and a woman calling for help from an upstairs bedroom.

A man was also shouting from an upstairs window at gardaí.

Hostage negotiators as well as emergency services were called to the scene and a cordon was put in place as negotiators tried to make contact with the man inside the house.

In a statement, gardaí said that shortly after 8am officers went into the house and arrested two men aged in their 20s and that during the arrest operation, taser, pepper spray and flash bangs were all used.

A man and a woman, both aged in their 50s, were taken to hospital. Both had sustained injuries some time before gardaí were alerted.
