Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating an allegation that a female patient was raped while she was undergoing a medical examination at the private Bon Secours Hospital in Tralee, Co Kerry.

The complaint was made to gardaí by the woman on the day the incident is alleged to have occurred earlier this month.

Part of the hospital was sealed-off by gardaí and declared a crime scene. It was examined by a garda crime scene investigation team.

The woman was examined at a specialist sexual assault unit at a hospital in Cork. She has also been offered counselling.

Investigating gardaí have taken a statement from the woman, who is aged in her 50s.

They have also interviewed around a dozen other people at the hospital.

CCTV footage from the hospital is being examined as part of the investigation, although it is understood that the room where the alleged rape took place was not covered by CCTV.

A spokesman for the hospital said it could make no comment while the garda investigation is under way.

A garda spokesman told RTÉ News that a file will be compiled and submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
