A man has been rescued from the sea off the south east coast after rescue services responded to an automatic alert system.

The man's boat capsized 30km off the Wexford coast at around 8pm.

The boat's Personal Locator Beacon was triggered, which sent a signal to the Irish Coastguard.

The Waterford rescue helicopter was sent to the scene and found the man sitting on his overturned boat.

He was winched to safety and taken to hospital in Waterford.

Personal Locator Beacons, or PLBs, are portable radio transmitters that aid the search and rescue emergency services in the detection and location of people in distress.

The PLB helps identify the owner of the boat and its location.
