A 13-year-old boy is in a stable condition in hospital after falling into a sand sinkhole in Co Kerry yesterday.

The boy was playing with friends at Inchimore, Kenmare, when the accident occurred at around 6.40pm.

Valentia Coast Guard attended the scene along with the ambulance service, fire crews and gardaí.

It is understood the boy's father managed to rescue his son from the sinkhole before the coast guard helicopter arrived.

The boy was flown to Cork University Hospital where his condition is described as stable.

Neighbour and local councillor Dan McCarthy who attended the scene paid tribute to the boy's two friends who summoned help.

"He had a miraculous escape," the councillor said.
