A body that was discovered washed up on rocks at Aughinish in Kinvara over the weekend has been identified following a garda appeal.

Gardaí this afternoon said the body, which was found on Sunday evening, was that of an 86-year-old man who had last been seen in Salthill, Co Galway, two days earlier.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out tomorrow at University Hospital Limerick.

Gardaí at Gort Garda Station had appealed for assistance identifying the body.

They have thanked the public for their help.
