More than 300 drivers were caught speeding over 24 hours as part of the national 'Slow Down' speed enforcement operation.

'Slow Down' was conducted by gardaí and GoSafe between 7am yesterday and 7am this morning.

In the 24-hour period the speed of 176,521 vehicles was checked, with 322 drivers were detected driving over the applicable speed limit.

In one incident a driver was detected driving at 140km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 at Joanstown, Ballinalack, Westmeath and another driver was detected driving at 128km/h in a 80 km/h zone on the R240 at Cashel, Carndonagh, Donegal.
