The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has launched an investigation after the death of a man in garda custody in Co Mayo.
It is understood the man, who was in his 70s, was arrested this morning, became unwell while in custody and had breathing difficulties.
CPR was administered by gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene.
However efforts to revive him were in vain and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident was referred to GSOC and investigators have been sent to Co Mayo to conduct the inquiry.
The State Pathologist has been informed and a post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.
