A search is continuing on the River Lee in Co Cork after the body of a man and two vehicles were recovered from the river this morning.

The alarm was raised shortly before 6am when an eye witness saw a car entering the water close to The Lee Rowing Club.

Emergency services responded and the car was recovered at around nine o'clock with no one inside.

As the search continued, a second vehicle was recovered and the Defence Force’s Naval Service Dive team recovered a body inside.

The dead man is understood to have been reported missing from Passage West in Co Cork three days ago.

However, it is understood that there is no connection between this man and his vehicle and the discovery of the car close by.

A coast guard helicopter, gardaí, Cork City Fire Service, the coast guard team from Crosshaven and the RNLI lifeboat from Crosshaven are all participating in a search of the river to establish if there was a body in the first car that entered the water.

A garda investigation is under way but foul play is not expected.
