The Health Service Executive has confirmed it will not be in a position to publish details of the sanctions, if any, imposed on staff at the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise as a result of failures at the hospital's maternity unit.

The disciplinary process was launched by the HSE following an RTÉ Investigations Unit report in 2014 into the deaths of five babies in the maternity unit.

In a statement today, the HSE said this process is ongoing, with a "significant body of work already completed."

The statement added that following legal advice the decision was taken to " make certain changes to the disciplinary process recently ...  that should serve to strengthen and improve the entire process."

The HSE added that "certain information" will be published following the process, but "the HSE will not be in a position to publish the details of what is in effect an internal disciplinary process for currently serving HSE staff members."
