A woman in her 70s has died following a road crash in west Cork.

It is understood the woman was crossing the street at Wolfe Tone Square in Bantry when she was struck by a truck, shortly before midday.

The woman, who was from west Cork, died at the scene. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

The woman's body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place.

Gardaí in Bantry are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 027-20860.

The street will remain closed for the afternoon to facilitate an examination by a forensic road crash investigator.

Traffic diversions are in place.
