An investigation is under way after the discovery of the bodies of a man and a boy in a stream in Ashtown, Dublin, this afternoon.

The bodies were those of a father and son. The man was in his 30s, the boy was around three years old.

The pair were found in a small amount of water in a stream behind housing in Ashington estate.

The stream runs alongside the Sligo train tracks and the Royal Canal.

Gardaí are investigating the full circumstances of what happened, but at this stage, it is thought it may have been a tragic accident.

The bodies were discovered by a passerby at around 3pm.

It is thought that the pair were visiting relatives in the area.

A small crowd gathered as news of the discovery became known.

The area was sealed-off and the state pathologist was alerted.

The bodies have been removed to the city morgue and post mortem examinations will be carried out tomorrow.
