Gardaí have seized a large quantity of firearms, including two AK47s, assault rifles and several hundred rounds of ammunition which they suspect could be connected to two feuding criminal gangs from the north side of Dublin.

Three men in their 30s were arrested in connection with the seizure. Two of them have strong connections to one of the north side criminal gangs involved in the feud.

They are being held at Ashbourne and Kells garda stations.

The operation was led by officers from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

The first arms find was made when armed officers from the Emergency Response Unit stopped two cars - one in Ratoath, the other outside the village.

Two AK47 assault rifles and more than 200 rounds of ammunition for the weapons were found.

In the follow-up search at a nearby location two semi-automatic pistols, silencers and more ammunition for these guns was found.

Gardaí are describing the seizure as highly significant and believe they have intercepted a large quantity of weapons that were being transported most likely for use by one of the gangs in the feud.
