An investigation is under way after a man's body was discovered in a slurry pit on a farm north of Cork city.

The body has been removed from the scene and a post-mortem examination will take place at Cork University Hospital tomorrow.

A formal identification process is also expected to take place tomorrow.

The discovery was made close to where a mobile phone belonging to a man missing since before Christmas was found.

31-year-old Diarmuid Twomey went missing after a night out with his partner.

He was last seen near Fairhill in Cork in the early hours of Sunday 20 December.

Extensive searches involving gardaí, search dog teams, a Coast Guard helicopter and the Civil Difence have since taken place.

Mr Twomey's mobile phone was found in a farmyard at Ballinahina, between the city and Whitechurch, but no further trace of him was found since.

This afternoon's discovery was made on a neighbouring farm.
