A woman in her 20s is in a stable condition in hospital after suffering serious injuries when she was attacked by a pitbull mastiff in her home in Co Cork yesterday.

The young woman, who is originally from Croatia, suffered serious injuries to both her arms when the dog, belonging to her partner, attacked her at their home in Mitchelstown.

Neighbours heard the young woman screaming for help when she attacked by the dog in the back yard of her house at around 9.15am.

A neighbour raised the alarm and gardaí from Mitchelstown Garda Station, which is just a few doors away from the victim's rented house on Upper Cork Street, arrived at the scene to discover the woman being attacked.

The gardaí had to use their batons and repeatedly strike the dog to get him to release the woman.

She was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to try and save her hands which were badly injured in the attack.
