A 27-year-old Irishman has died in an accident in Australia after falling from a houseboat into the Murray River, near the border between New South Wales and Victoria.

Police were alerted this afternoon local time that the man, who was staying on the boat with friends, had fallen from the top deck into the water.

The man has been named as Niall Quinn from Silverbridge near Newry in Co Down.

It is believed Mr Quinn, a tourist in Australia, may have hit his head as he fell in.

His body was located in waters nearby by police divers.

Ten privately owned vessels also assisted in the search.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the man's family.
