About 200 people gathered outside the neolithic burial mound at Newgrange in Co Meath this morning to celebrate the winter solstice.
However, cloudy and wet conditions prevented dawn sunlight from lighting-up the inner chamber of the 5,000-year-tomb.
Around 50 people had been selected through an annual lottery system to observe from inside the tomb.
