Independent Councillor Willie Crowley has died following an alleged hit-and-run incident in Newbridge, Co Kildare, on Tuesday evening.

The 65-year-old was struck by a vehicle as he crossed Eyre St at the junction of John's Street and James Street.

Mr Crowley was elected to Kildare County Council in May 2014 and had announced his intention to contest the General Election in Kildare South as a member of the Independent Alliance.

He is survived by his wife Claire and his children.

A 28-year-old man was arrested in Newbridge in connection with the incident.

He appeared before Naas District Court yesterday, where he was charged with road traffic offences.
