A 53-year-old man has been arrested in Co Westmeath in connection with an investigation into the murder of Brigid Maguire.

The body of Ms Maguire was found at around 9.30pm last night in a house in the Co Westmeath village of Ballinacargy.

The discovery was made by her teenage daughter.

A post mortem has been carried out on the victim's remains, but gardaí are not releasing the results of the examination for operational reasons.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity on the Main Street in Ballinacargy between 5pm and 9pm yesterday to contact them at Mullingar Garda Station on 044-9384000.

The mother of two teenage children was well-known in the area and had been living in recent times in a house in the centre of the village.

Local Fianna Fáil TD Robert Troy said the whole community was deeply shocked at the news of the her death.

“The news that broke last night has sent shock waves right through to the very heart of our community.

"She was a lovely lady, a great mother, a hard worker and a great family person," Mr Troy said.

The man was brought to Mullingar Garda Station where he is being questioned in connection with the death of the former hospital worker.
