A two-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl are among six people injured in a crash between two cars near Monasterevin in Co Kildare at around midday.
One of the cars, with three men in it, was seen by gardaí travelling at speed near Monasterevin.
It is reported that the car had been seen in the vicinity of recent burglaries in the area and gardaí had been attempting to locate it before the crash, which occurred at Ballagh on the Monasterevin to Portarlington road.
A man and two children were in the second car.
Investigators from the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission have attended the scene.
The investigators have been examining the circumstances surrounding the crash however it is understood at this stage that the investigation into the collision will be more likely to be a Garda-led investigation.
Local residents who were at the scene shortly after the crash say a helicopter airlifted at least one of the injured to hospital.
The two men who were seriously injured are being treated at Tallaght and Beaumont hospitals.
The four other injured were taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore.
