Galway East Fianna Fáil TD Michael Kitt is to retire from politics at the next general election.
Currently Leas-Cheann Comhairle, Mr Kitt has served in a number of junior ministerial roles during his time in the Dáil.
He also served as a senator from 1977 to 1981 and was elected to Galway County Council in 1975.
He comes from a family with strong links to Fianna Fáil. His father was a TD for 21 years, until 1975. His brother, Tom Kitt, and sister, Áine Brady, also represented the party in the last Dáil.
Mr Kitt said he was glad to have served the people of East Galway but that it was now time for the next chapter of his life.
There had been speculation about Mr Kitt's political intentions since the defection of former Labour Party TD Colm Keaveney to Fianna Fáil in 2013.
Galway East is being reduced to a three-seat constituency at the next election, after boundary revisions saw 33 electoral divisions moved to the new Roscommon-Galway constituency.
