A man has been arrested by gardaí investigating a crash landing of a helicopter in Longford last night.

It is understood the man in his 60s was detained at Dublin Airport this evening. He is now being questioned by detectives at Longford Garda station.

The incident happened at around 9pm yesterday when the helicopter struck the perimeter walls of a pub in Abbeyshrule

A pilot and a passenger on board the aircraft escaped serious injury.

The alarm was raised by a local teenager, Ciaran Doyle, who along with his father, witnessed the incident.

Ciaran spoke to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland about the incident.

"It was hovering over the canal, and onto the banks of the canal, for about five minutes. We were watching it, and it started to come in close to the Rustic [Inn pub], and it started moving towards the back,” he explained.

"It swung around, and hit off the back of the Rustic.

"The minute I saw it, my hands started to shake, and I picked up the phone and called the emergency services.

"The propellers did most of the damage to the building itself."
