Two men in their early 20s have been arrested in Co Kildare after shots were fired at gardaí who were attempting to stop a car early this morning.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened at Clonmoyle, between Rathangan and Monasterevin at about 1am.

Armed gardaí pursued the car and two men were arrested a short distance away.

Gardaí did not return fire and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

The scene at Clonmoyle has been sealed off and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí say the men were arrested as part of an operation targeting a criminal gang in Kildare believed to be responsible for a gun and petrol bomb attack on Carbury Garda Station.

The gang is believed to also have been responsible for the intimidation of members of the gardaí which resulted in them being formally warned of threats to their lives.

Both men are being detained at Leixlip Garda Station and can be held for up for three days.
