A 14-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Shannon in Co Westmeath yesterday evening.

It is understood he was swimming close to the Athlone Sub Aqua clubhouse beside the railway bridge over the river.

The teenager was taken from the water after a 15 minute search by members of the sub aqua club with the assistance of the RNLI’s Coosan Point unit.

He was brought to the Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

He has since been transferred to Temple Street Children's University Hospital in Dublin.
