The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission is to investigate the death of a man in Tralee, Co Kerry.
Nigel Leigh, 42, from Fossa in Killarney, was found dead at approximately 7am near Kerry General Hospital.
He was arrested for public order offences yesterday evening near his home in Killarney and brought to Killarney Garda Station.
Gardaí say that shortly after arrival at the station, an ambulance was called and he was transferred to Kerry General Hospital.
Early this morning a member of the public found the man's body beside the car wash at Kelleher's Garage, Rathass, near the hospital
As a result of the man having been in contact with gardaí before his death, the incident was referred to the Garda Ombudsman for independent investigation.
GSOC investigators have been deployed to the scene and will examine the circumstances of the death.
GSOC are appealing for anyone who may have encountered the man in the early hours of this morning, or anyone with information which may assist the investigation to contact them on 1890 600 800.
