A garda superintendent has been appointed to investigate an incident involving a member of the force and a homeless man which took place last week in Dublin city centre.

During the video the garda appears to have his foot on the leg of the man, who is lying on the ground.

The inquiry will also examine whether or not the garda used pepper spray on the man after he was handcuffed.

The incident happened on Dublin's Henry Street last Friday at around 3.30pm and was captured on video which was subsequently posted on Facebook.

According to garda sources, it is understood that during the incident the garda's pepper spray canister was taken.

The same sources say the garda recovered the canister and used it to subdue the man who was then placed in handcuffs.

Gardaí have begun an internal investigation into the incident .

A superintendent from outside the division has been appointed to look at what happened and see what, if any, action should be taken against the officer involved.

It is understood the investigation will examine if the garda used pepper spray after the man was placed in handcuffs and if and why he placed his foot on the man

A spokesperson for the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission said it is currently assessing the video to decide whether or not it will carry out its own investigation.
