Nearly 2,000 Leaving Certificate pupils who were granted an exemption from studying Irish in 2013/14 due to learning disabilities continued to study a foreign language.

The information was obtained from the Department of Education by Nuacht RTÉ/TG4 under the Freedom of Information Act.

A total of 4,909 pupils were granted an exemption from studying Irish due to learning disabilities during the 2013/14 school year.

Dublin had the highest number of exemptions due to learning disabilities - 1,167 were granted in the capital.
