A murder investigation is under way after a man was shot dead in Dublin.

The 64-year-old victim was shot at his home on Harty Avenue in Walkinstown.

Detectives are now trying to establish a motive for the attack but are not sure if the victim was the gunman's intended target.

A burned out car was found a short distance away on John McCormack Avenue.

Both locations remain sealed off for forensic examination.

At around 9.30pm, a gunman called to the victim's home and fired four shots through the front door.

The man who had come to answer was shot twice through the glass.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was removed to St James’s Hospital where he died a short time later.

The gunman was driven away in a Honda Civic, which was later found burned out nearby on John McCormack Avenue.
