Over €1m worth of jewellery was taken during a raid on a premises in Galway city centre this morning.

Staff at Hartmann's Jewellers on William Street were confronted by four armed raiders shortly before 11am.

They demanded access to stock and made their getaway on foot through a pedestrianised section of Galway city.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Plain clothes detectives were alerted when the raiders entered the premises and pursued them as they fled the scene.

Two men were caught and arrested on nearby Middle Street and two others were subsequently detained at a city centre location early this afternoon.

All the stolen jewellery has been recovered, along with an imitation firearm.

The four men, all in their 30s, are being questioned at Mill Street Garda Station tonight.

They can be detained for up to 24 hours.
