Sydney police have arrested and charged a 25-year-old Irishman overnight for allegedly assaulting a Sydney driver.

The incident occurred at 1.45am Sydney time.

Police say the Irish tourist was walking in traffic on Sussex Street with another man, when the driver told them to get off the road.

The Irishman allegedly gave chase, caught up with the car at traffic lights, kicked the car and then punched the driver through an open car window.

The 30-year-old Sydney man suffered bruising, facial injuries and a broken tooth.

The unnamed Irishman was charged with assault, occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at a Sydney court on 25 February.
