A 27-year-old man is being questioned following a four-hour stand-off during which he barricaded himself inside a house in Co Cork.
The man is being detained at Mallow Garda Station.
He is being questioned about an assault on a woman in her 20s, during which she was beaten and held at the house.
The woman escaped and was brought to hospital in the early hours of this morning.
She sustained serious facial injuries and is being treated at Cork University Hospital.
The man barricaded himself into the house at Sandfield Terrace in Mallow when gardaí went there at around 3am.
Members of the Garda Regional Support Unit, an on-scene commander and a trained garda negotiator spent around four hours at the scene, before the man came out of the house at around 6.30am.
